Location and classification
The Burggarten is a single vineyard site in Dernau in the Ahr. The vineyard site forms a connection between Dernau and the Recher Blume site. Its name refers to a former castle in Dernau.
Terrain and soils
The site extends from 125 to 220 metres above sea level. Around 20 per cent of the area is steep, 20 per cent is sloping and 60 per cent is flat; the aspect is described as south-west to east. The soils include weathered slate, hill-slope loam, loess, terraced gravel and greywacke. In the valley plots, sandy loess loam lies over Ahr gravel.
Climate and cultivation
The surroundings of Dernau are characterised by mild winters, low rainfall and many hours of sunshine. Broad valley plots are considered susceptible to spring frosts. The flatter areas allow for mechanical cultivation of the soil. A replanting in the Burggarten is managed using the training system “reverse training”.
Grape varieties and wine style
The designated area covers around 30 hectares and is fully planted. Of this, around 24 hectares are devoted to Spätburgunder, 1 hectare to Portugieser and 2 hectares to Riesling. The wines are described as piquant and lively to full-bodied, especially from vines on loess and loam.
