Location and Vine Growing
Burgberg is a vineyard site on the upper slopes of Burgberg near Steinheim an der Murr in the wine-growing region Württemberg. The site is classified under the large site Wunnenstein. While the upper slopes are documented as vineyard land, the summit is used for agriculture.
Topography and Terraces
Burgberg forms a south-west-facing spur between the Otterbach valley and the Dienstbachtal. Its summit lies approximately 286 metres above sea level. The slopes above the Otterbach valley include terraced areas; a height difference of about 70 metres between the Otterbach valley and Burg Steinheim is overcome by former vineyard strips.
Dry Stone Walls and History
Historic dry stone walls made of Muschelkalk shape the former vineyard terraces. Vine growing has been carried out on Burgberg for centuries, with the former vineyard areas extending further into the slopes and valleys than they do today. The dry stone walls are maintained and regularly repaired. In 1981, a nature conservation model project was set up to keep the Muschelkalk walls clear and to protect dry, warm habitats for vineyards.
