Location and landscape
Burgberg is a registered single vineyard in Mayschoß in the wine-growing region Ahr. The site is located in the area of the Saffenburg above Mayschoß. It extends from around 140 to 250 metres in altitude and consists of roughly 50 per cent steep slopes, 40 per cent sloping land and 10 per cent flat areas.
Soils and orientation
Burgberg is predominantly oriented west-east. Owing to the inclusion of the former areas Lochmühlerley and Silberberg, the site has different exposures and soil conditions. The soils are described as slightly loamy to sandy slate soils from weathered slate. In the Guckley area, a basalt occurrence has also been documented as a geological relic of tertiary volcanic activity.
Vines and wine character
The 2024 vineyard register lists 25.2 hectares of vineyard area. Planting includes around 16 hectares of Spätburgunder, 2 hectares of Frühburgunder, 1 hectare each of Dornfelder and Regent, 4 hectares of Riesling, 2 hectares of Müller-Thurgau and 1 hectare of Weißburgunder. For the site, lively, fresh white wines and fruity red wines are described; wines from soils marked by loam and marble are characterised as fuller-bodied. A monorack railway makes work in the steep slopes easier.
History and classification
The name Burgberg goes back to the Saffenburg, which was built by the Counts of Saffenburg in the eleventh century and completely destroyed in 1704. The former vineyard names Lochmühlerley and Silberberg were incorporated into the designation Burgberg in 1971. Legally, Burgberg is registered as a single vineyard of the Großlage Klosterberg in the Walporzheim/Ahr area within the Ahr Qualitätsweinbaugebiet.
