Location and context
Burgberg is a single vineyard site in Ober-Ingelheim within Ingelheim am Rhein in the Bingen area of the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. The site belongs to the Großlage Kaiserpfalz and is located on the Mainzer Berg above Ober-Ingelheim. The name Burgberg refers to the castle church of Ober-Ingelheim.
Soils
Cretaceous Rendzina and loess-pararendzina have been documented. The Rendzina is shallow to moderately deep, very rich in lime, stony and sandy loam. It has limited water storage available to plants, as well as good drainage and warming capacity. The loess-pararendzina is a deep, fertile and lime-containing loam with high water storage available to plants and good rootability.
Grape varieties and wine style
Silvaner, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Spätburgunder and Sauvignon Blanc have been documented in plots of Burgberg. Wines produced from the calcareous soils are described as mineral, chalky, aromatic and structured, with balanced acidity; aromas of citrus fruits, apple, gooseberry, mango and passion fruit are mentioned. Loess-driven wines are considered fruit-forward and refreshing, with aromas of apple, peach, pear and citrus fruits, mild acidity and medium body.
Documented wines
Documented are dry Silvaner, dry Spätburgunder, as well as Riesling ice wine and Gewürztraminer ice wine. A Burgberg Silvaner from the VIVES wine range was aged in barrique.
