Location and Classification
The Burgberg is located in Dorsheim in the winegrowing region of Nahe, on the north side of the Trollbachtal, below Burg Layen. The vineyard site is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® and covers 4.80 hectares.
Topography and Climate
The steep slope, facing south to south-east, stretches across approximately 130 to 190 metres in altitude and has a gradient of roughly 20 to 60 per cent. Its convex, amphitheatre-like form is bounded by rocks and bushes. The sheltered, basin-like location is enclosed by rock faces that keep out north, west and east winds and store the warmth of the day.
Soils and Grape Variety
The soils consist of iron-rich loam with a high proportion of Taunus quartzite, as well as slate and scree. Riesling is the classified and predominantly planted grape variety. In the lower part of the slope, in frosty winter nights, cold air collects, creating conditions there for the production of ice wine.
Wines and History
The Rieslings from the Burgberg are described as having deep, piquant and often salty mineral notes, along with a high potential for ageing. The VDP wineries Schlossgut Diel and Kruger-Rumpf work the Burgberg. The name of the vineyard site has been documented since the 14th century; it refers to Burg Layen and first appears in the land register in 1819.
