Location and Climate
Brunnenhäuschen is a single vineyard site in Westhofen in the Wonnegau, a part of the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. The south-facing location lies at around 180 to 240 metres above sea level and, in the classified area, has a gradient of roughly 20 per cent. Westerly winds ensure a comparatively cool climate, late ripening and a long growing season.
Soils and Grape Varieties
The soils consist of clay marl with plenty of lime and limestone rock in the subsoil. Some sub-areas feature red Terra Rossa with a high iron oxide content. The lime-rich subsoil supports water availability during dry periods. The most important grape varieties documented are Riesling and Spätburgunder; in addition, Silvaner and Sauvignon Blanc are grown.
History and Classification
The wine site is documented for the year 1721 under the name am brunnenhäusschen. The name refers to a spring protected by a small building, which was connected to a water reservoir. The historical field name Abtserde was until 1971 an independent site designation and forms an essential part of the classified area. The VDP lists Brunnenhäuschen as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® with Riesling as the classified grape variety and a classified area of 13.06 hectares.
