Location and Geography
Braunfels is a vineyard site in Wiltingen in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer wine-growing region in Germany. The site, which faces south to south-southwest, lies at about 200 to 240 metres above sea level and has a slope of 38 to 51 percent.
Soil and Farming
The documented soil type of Braunfels is slate. The VDP-classified area comprises 17.00 hectares. Due to the steep slopes of the documented plots, the harvest is carried out entirely by hand.
Grape Variety and Wines
As the VDP-classified grape variety, Riesling is listed. Documented wines from Wiltinger Braunfels include dry Rieslings. A documented Riesling from Van Volxem was fermented spontaneously and matured in large wooden casks.
Classification
Wiltinger Braunfels is already listed on a historical map of Mosel wine-growing from 1906. The VDP lists Braunfels as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®; this is a VDP classification and not a statutory German wine designation.
