Location and Name
Bratenhöfchen is the historical name for a vineyard site above Bernkastel in the municipality of Bernkastel-Kues on the Mosel. The name is recorded on the historical Mosel wine-growing map of the Regierungsbezirk Trier from 1906. Since 2025, Bratenhöfchen and Matheisbildchen have been incorporated into the newly delimited single vineyard of Bernkasteler Badstube; Bratenhöfchen is therefore both a historical vineyard designation and, at the same time, a smaller geographical name.
Aspect and Soils
The site is predominantly oriented west-south-west. The slope gradient lies between about 15 and 55 per cent. For a documented experimental plot, an altitude of approximately 200 metres, a south-west exposure and a slope of around 40 per cent are given.
The soils consist of medium-deep, stony, and partly clay-rich slate weathering deposits. In addition, fresh, stony slate weathering deposits are documented.
Grape Variety and Wine Tradition
Riesling is documented for Bratenhöfchen; one producer states that they plant their plots there exclusively with Riesling. Historical records list Bernkasteler Bratenhöfchen Riesling as Spätlese and Eiswein.
Phenological Observations
An approximately one-hectare vineyard site in Bratenhöfchen was used from 1967 to at least 2001 for observations of vine phenology.
