Location and classification
Börnchen is a registered single vineyard in the cadastral area of the municipality of Harxheim in Rheinhessen. It belongs to the large vineyard of Sankt Alban in the Nierstein area. In the official vineyard register 2024 it is listed under number 720916; the planted vineyard area is 13.3 hectares.
Topography and soils
The site, oriented towards the south to south-west, lies at about 150 to 220 metres above sea level and has slopes of up to around 20 per cent. Documented are loess-pararendzina and marl-pararendzina. The loess soil is deep, calcareous and fertile, stores water well and enables good root penetration. The marl soil is a deep, strongly calcareous clay soil with springable clay as well as somewhat limited drainage and aeration.
Grape varieties and wine styles
In Börnchen, Riesling, Spätburgunder, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Mitos are planted. Wines from the loess-pararendzina soils are described with fruit-forward notes of apple, peach, pear and citrus, moderate structure, gentle acidity and an early-to-access style. Marl-pararendzina produces fuller, denser and more powerful wines with balanced acidity; white wines can show tropical and stone-fruit aromas, while red wines show dark fruit and smoky spiced notes.
Name
The name Börnchen refers to a small spring and is derived from the Middle High German word “born”.
