Location and classification
Bischofsweg is an officially registered single vineyard in the Mußbacher cadastral area of the municipality of Neustadt an der Weinstraße in the Pfalz. In the directory of wine-growing sites, the site is listed under the wine-growing code 820914. For the 2024 harvest year, 46.3 hectares of planted vineyard area are recorded.
Topography and soil
A documented experimental site in Mußbacher Bischofsweg shows a slope of 0 to 2 per cent and a southern aspect; the vineyard rows run from north to south. Another section in the Bischofsweg/L516 area lies at approximately 140 to 145 metres above sea level and is almost level with a slight south-eastern gradient. The soil of the experimental site is described as loamy sand to sandy loam.
Grape varieties and wines
In an official experiment, Riesling clone N90 is documented on SO4 rootstock; the plot was planted in 2000. Cabernet Mitos is sourced from a local winery from Mußbacher Bischofsweg. A dry red wine made from Cabernet Mitos is documented, as well as a Riesling Beerenauslese from the 2003 vintage from Mußbacher Bischofsweg.
Cultivation
A long-term experiment investigated four systems of ground cover and soil care between the vine rows: open ground management in all rows, every second row under cover, a temporary disturbance of the ground cover, and permanent ground cover. In some variants, a reduction in yield was carried out after veraison. The documented plot had a vine spacing of 200 × 120 centimetres.
