Location and context
Birkenberg is an officially recorded vineyard site in Roxheim in the Nahe wine-growing region Nahe. The site is located above Roxheim in the Gräfenbachtal, a side valley of the lower Nahe.
Climate and terrain
Within the Nahe wine-growing region, Roxheim has a mild, well-balanced and comparatively dry climate. Birkenberg is precisely orientated to the south and has slope gradients of around 40 to 70 per cent. The site is farmed as a steep-slope vineyard.
Soil and grape variety
The vineyard consists for the most part of weathered sands from Rotliegend formations. Near the upper tree line there is a gravel layer, described as former river gravel above the Rotliegend material. In the Roxheim Birkenberg, Riesling is documented.
Riesling character
Rieslings associated with Birkenberg are described as fine-fruited and lively. Flavours mentioned include yellow apple, lemon and grapefruit; in years with higher soil moisture, notes of peach and apricot are also present.
