Location and classification
Bildstock is a single-vineyard site in the municipality of Nierstein. It belongs to the Nierstein area and to the Großlage Spiegelberg in Rheinhessen. In the official wine-growing sites register, it is listed under number 721002.
Topography and soils
The roughly 68-hectare site lies at an altitude of 90 to 118 metres and is oriented to the south-east. The mapped soils are marl/pelosol and loess/pararendzina. Marl/pelosol is a deep, calcareous clay soil with a high content of nutrients and limestone, while loess/pararendzina is described as deep, fertile, calcareous, and well suited to root penetration.
Wine style
Parcels with marl/pelosol are associated with full-bodied, dense and fruit-accented wines. Loess/pararendzina stands for lighter, fresher and more strongly fruit-driven wines. Documented bottlings are available, among others, from Riesling, Grauburgunder (Grey Burgundy), Spätburgunder (Late Burgundy), Frühburgunder (Early Burgundy) and Kleiner Heunisch (Small Heunisch). Also evidenced are dry wines from Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder and Frühburgunder.
Cellaring and origin of the name
A 2021 Grauburgunder from Bildstock was spontaneously fermented and matured in a Tonneau from vines with more than 70 years of wine-growing history, following selective hand harvesting. A 2020 Spätburgunder matured in wooden barrels, a 2021 Frühburgunder was hand-picked and matured in large wooden barrels. The name of the site refers to a field cross.
