Location
Bienengarten is a single vineyard site in the district of Güls in the municipality of Koblenz in the German wine-growing region of Mosel. It lies above Koblenz-Güls on the lower Mosel, near the confluence of the Mosel and the Rhine.
Topography and soils
The steep vineyard site is located on the Heyerberg and is described as a distinctive rocky cone above Güls. Its south-south-westerly orientation allows the vines to receive sunlight throughout the day; at the same time, a cool wind is documented there. The soils are shaped by weathering of slate and greywacke.
Cultivation
The steep terrain requires manual work from vine pruning through to grape harvesting. For wines based on the vineyard site from Bienengarten parcels, reduced yields and selective hand-harvesting are documented.
Wines and classification
In the Bienengarten parcels of a local winery, only Riesling is grown. Documented Bienengarten wines include dry Riesling Kabinett, sweet Riesling Spätlese and semi-dry Weißburgunder. In addition, a Gülser Bienengarten with Weißburgunder from the 2024 vintage is listed, as well as a Gülser Bienengarten with Spätburgunder from the 2013 vintage. Officially, Bienengarten is listed as a single vineyard site within the Großlage Weinhex, Bereich Burg Cochem, wine-growing region of Mosel; the 2024 register gives the designation number 440506 and 7.1 hectares of planted vineyard area.
