Location and classification
Bergpfad is a registered single vineyard in Friesenheim in Rheinhessen. The site belongs to the Nierstein area and the grand cru Gutes Domtal. Its name refers to a mountain path in close proximity. Friesenheim lies in the Selz valley; the Selz flows through the town area.
Relief and soil
The vineyards are located at around 140 to 180 metres above sea level and face north-west. The soil is classified as marly pelosol. It consists of deep, calcareous clay with a high proportion of clay that is able to swell, and is described as a clay-rich deposit from the tertiary sea.
Viticulture and wine style
The soil is rich in nutrients and strongly calcareous, but has low permeability to water and aeration, a medium capacity for warming, and makes rooting difficult. Riesling, varieties of the Pinot family, aromatic varieties, as well as white and red grape varieties are grown.
The terroir profile combines marly pelosol with full-bodied, dense and richly structured wines with moderate acidity and a creamy texture. Mature fruit notes mentioned include mango, apricot and honeydew melon; the character is more fruit-forward and more substantial than mineral in character.
