Location and classification
Bergel is an officially listed single-vineyard site in Edenkoben in the Pfalz. The site belongs to the large site Schloss Ludwigshöhe and is located above Edenkoben on the lower slopes at the edge of the hill country.
Soil and climate
The subsoil is described as a sediment fan with sandstone from the adjacent hill country under a loess cover. Further information mentions sandy and loamy soils, loess loam, limestone and sandstone, as well as surface-near deposits of clayey sand, silt and marl-like clay. A Riesling parcel therefore receives sunshine from the early morning hours until late evening; there it is harvested earlier than in a comparable site.
Grape varieties and wine styles
From Bergel, Rieslings are documented as Qualitätswein and Prädikatswein in dry, delicately off-dry and sweet versions, as well as as Kabinett. In addition, Silvaner and Morio-Muskat are listed with the designation Edenkobener Bergel. An Eiswein from the 2024 vintage is a cuvée of Petit Manseng and Riesling.
Ice-wine harvest
A documented ice-wine harvest in Bergel took place in darkness by hand at −8 °C with twelve harvest helpers. The frozen grapes were pressed while still frozen; before fermentation and maturation, around 100 litres of must with 128 degrees Oechsle are given.
