Location and Classification
Mountains are an officially registered single vineyard in the wine-growing region Nahe, in the Nahe valley area, and within the Großlage Kronenberg. The site belongs to the town Bad Kreuznach; the cadastral district is Winzenheim. In the official directory of wine-growing sites it bears the number 510102 and comprises 22.5 hectares of planted vineyard area.
Topography and Soils
The vineyards lie on the Winzenheim Mountain, a managed wine-growing site and an elevated landscape form above the Nahe valley near Bad Kreuznach-Winzenheim. For the Winzenheim Mountain, aspects from south-west via south to south-east are documented. The soils consist of heavy clay, locally with gravelly loess clay; in addition, Rüpel tone, Rotliegend subsoil, and older terrace gravel are described.
Climate and Grape Varieties
A historical study linked winegrowing on the Winzenheim Mountain with favourable climatic conditions and described the wider Kreuznach area, compared with Germany, as warm and dry. Historically, Riesling is documented in the upper part of the Winzenheim Mountain. Current wine documentation also names Weißburgunder and Grauburgunder.
Wine Styles and History
Documented are Riesling Spätlese as well as dry Grauburgunder and Weißburgunder. For Weißburgunder it is described that the clay-rich vineyard provides for body and a richer texture. Historical geological and agricultural publications confirm the Winzenheim Mountain as a winegrowing location and refer to Riesling plantings as well as grape cultivation in the early 20th century.
