Location and classification
The Benediktusberg is a vineyard site in Retzbach in the wine-growing region Franken. The classified area designated by the VDP covers 27 hectares. The VDP lists the site as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®; this classification is a VDP classification and not a statutory German wine-growing classification.
Topography and soil
The site, which faces south to south-west, is located at around 190 to 280 metres above sea level and has slope inclinations of 25 to 60 percent. The subsoil consists of shell limestone, in particular of Lower Muschelkalk and exposed wave limestone formations.
Grape varieties and wines
The classified grape varieties are Silvaner and Spätburgunder. Rudolf May documents wines from these two grape varieties from the Benediktusberg under the designation VDP.ERSTES GEWÄCHS®.
Historical designation
Thierthal, an old cadastral name for the best part of the Benediktusberg, is documented with a history of more than 1,200 years.
