Location and Classification
The Baßgeige is the Oberbergener Bassgeige vineyard site in Oberbergen, a district of Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl, in the Baden wine-growing region. For the Oberbergener Bassgeige, the VDP records a classified area of 262 hectares and classifies it as VDP.ERSTE LAGE®.
Climate, Aspect and Soils
The area around Oberbergen and the Baßgeige is described as being shaped by the Mediterranean and rich in sunshine. The vineyard site is orientated from west to south-west, lies at around 260 to 380 metres above sea level and has slopes of 0 to 40 per cent. It comprises numerous individual plots as well as small, steep terraces.
The documented soils consist of loess and volcanic material. A combination of volcanic rock and warm loess-clay soils is also described.
Grape Varieties and Wine Styles
For the Oberbergener Bassgeige, the VDP lists White Burgundy (Weißer Burgunder), Grey Burgundy (Grauer Burgunder), Chardonnay and Spätburgunder as classified grape varieties. Wines made from Muscateller and Merlot are also documented from the Baßgeige. The site is particularly associated with Burgundy varieties; it produces white, grey and red Burgundy wines, including dry quality wines and Prädikatsweine.
Name and Winemaking
According to the local producer, the name goes back to the shape of the vineyard plots, which, when viewed from above, resembled a double bass more than 100 years ago. For Baßgeige wines, an TT edition with reduced yields through splitting the grapes is also documented. The Oberbergen winegrowing cooperative describes the gentle processing of the grapes and transparent cellar processes.
