Location and classification
The Ausoniusstein is the single vineyard of Lehmener Ausoniusstein in Lehmen on the Mosel. In the official register of wine-growing sites for 2024, the site is listed under number 440523 and is assigned to the area of Burg Cochem.
Relief and soils
The wine site consists mostly of a terraced slate vineyard: around 90 per cent is accounted for by steep areas and 10 per cent by flat areas. The slope reaches up to 70 per cent. The hillside facing south-east lies about 80 to 180 metres above sea level. The soils are described as stony weathering soils of slate and greywacke.
Cultivation and wine style
The official register lists 1.9 hectares of planted vineyard area for Ausoniusstein. Around 94 per cent of the plantings are Riesling and around 6 per cent are Weißburgunder. Dry Riesling wines are documented.
Name and surroundings
The wine site, located directly on the Mosel, is influenced by the microclimate of the regulated river course. Its name refers to Decimus Magnus Ausonius, who described the Mosel region in the year 371 in his work Mosella.
