Location and orientation
Aulenberg is a single vineyard site within the municipal area of Uelversheim, within the Großlage of Krötenbrunnen in the Nierstein area of Rheinhessen. The wine-growing site comprises 113 hectares, lies at an altitude of about 170 to 215 metres, and is oriented to the south to south-east.
Soil
The documented soil type is loess over pararendzina. The loess is described as calcareous and, during the ice ages, as dust deposited by the wind. The soil profile consists of deep, light-coloured loamy soil with clayey silt, a high capacity for storing water available to plants, and good aeration and root penetration. The soil is rich in nutrients and calcareous, warms up moderately, and has a high growth potential.
Name and wine style
The name Aulenberg is associated with finds of clay; the term refers to the Latin word Aulla for pot.
