Location and classification
Annaberg is an officially registered single vineyard in the municipality and cadastral district of Schweich on the Mosel. It belongs to the large-scale vineyard of Probstberg and to the area of Bernkastel. In the 2024 vineyard directory it is listed under number 410710; the planted vineyard area is 24.1 hectares.
Topography and soils
The vineyard site lies on a steep slope with an aspect facing exactly south. The location is described as deep, Rotliegend material from the Wittlich Basin, combined with red slate and greywacke. A technical publication describes the soil as a Rigosol from red, weathered Devonian clay slate, with a deep, loess-containing culture horizon over a nutrient-poor subsoil.
Riesling and style
Riesling wines are covered under the designation Schweicher Annaberg Riesling. For Riesling from the red Devonian slates of the Schweicher Annaberg, wort, a fresh acidity and minerality are described. As fruit aromas, yellow and yellow-red apples as well as ripe pears are mentioned; in addition, a longer development of the wines is indicated.
Historical classification and vinification
In the wine-growing map for the Regierungsbezirk Trier from 1868, Annaberg was classified as a first-class vineyard site. For a documented Schweicher Annaberg Riesling, the healthy grapes were selectively hand-harvested into small buckets. After a slight crushing and a two-hour pressing, fermentation took place in the stainless-steel tank with naturally occurring vineyard and cellar yeasts. The wine remained on full lees until the spring and was then transferred to used and new oak barrels until bottling.
