Site and Climate
Alter Berg is a registered single-vineyard site in Lengfurt in the Main area of the Franconian wine-growing region Franken in Bavaria. The south-west-facing site has a slope of around 50 per cent. Lengfurt lies in the rain shadow of the Spessart and has a comparatively warm and dry climate. The Main influences the wine-growing region through local moisture and mild climatic conditions.
Soil and Area
Alter Berg is located on Lower Muschelkalk. The vineyard slopes of Lengfurt belong to the Muschelkalk marl landscape, which extends from the Homburger Kallmuth area. The planted area is given as around 2.6 to 3 hectares.
Grapes and Wines
Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau are documented for the Lengfurt Alter Berg. The documented single-vineyard wines include dry Silvaner and dry Müller-Thurgau, each referred to as Qualitätswein Franken. In 2015, 3,000 new Silvaner vines were planted in the Lengfurt Alter Berg; the first yield was expected after about three years.
History
Alter Berg is already mentioned in the Grundbuch of the Triefenstein monastery from 1421. Historical sub-areas bore the names Schmencklynsberg, am Kreuz and Wedler. Due to cement production carried out in Lengfurt for more than a century, the historical vineyard area was significantly reduced. The remaining Alter Berg is described as a small preserved single-vineyard site.
