Location and Geography
The Altenberg, referred to as the Abtswinder Altenberg, is located in Abtswind in the wine-growing region Franconia. The vineyard site, which is oriented to the south to south-west, lies at about 230 metres above sea level and has slope gradients of 20 to 45 per cent. The local climate is considered to be protected.
Soil and Vineyard Area
The soil consists of middle Gipskeuper and is described as loamy and calcareous. The classified vineyard area covers 6.00 hectares. The grape varieties Silvaner and Scheurebe are documented.

The official vineyard profile describes the wines as floral and aromatic.
Development and Classification
As part of a replanting, the Altenberg was remodelled through extensive land alterations and concreted access roads. The first wine from the newly planted vines was harvested in 1964. In the Bavarian register of geographical indications, Abtswind is listed as the lending community of the Großlage Schild; the Abtswinder Altenberg is classified separately by the VDP as VDP.ERSTE LAGE.
