Location and classification
The Alte Badstube am Doctorberg is a legally defined single vineyard in the Bernkastel district of Bernkastel-Kues on the Mosel. It lies immediately next to the Bernkastel Doctor. In the official delimitation for 2025, it is listed as single vineyard number 41 05 16 in the Bernkastel cadastral area.
Topography and soils
The vineyards face south and have a slope gradient of approximately 45 to 60 per cent. The soil is described as stony, bluish-grey slate weathering soil with a high capacity for storing heat; the topsoil contains loam. Further details mention weathered dark slate with a high proportion of fine soil and humus.
Vines and cultivation
The site covers approximately 1.8 hectares of vine area. Riesling is grown there, including rootstock-authentic Riesling. Some vines are more than 70 years old. The stated yield is approximately 55 to 65 hectolitres per hectare.
Wine styles and history
From this site, Riesling Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Eiswein and Trockenbeerenauslese are documented. This means that both dry and sweet Prädikat wine styles are covered. According to the description by Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler, the Alte Badstube am Doctorberg is the only new German single vineyard created after the German Wine Law of 1971.
