Altdörr

Location and classification

Altdörr is a registered single-vineyard site in the Nierstein area in Rheinhessen. It is located in the cadastral district of Friesenheim and forms part of the Großlage Gutes Domtal. In the vineyard register for 2024, 39.5 hectares were planted with vines. The site is listed there under number 720405.

Soil

The documented soil type is marl, or respectively Pelosol, from calcareous, clayey deposits of the Tertiary sea. The deep, lime-rich clay has a high proportion of swelling clay, limited water storage available to plants, and restricted permeability and aeration. The nutrient and lime content is high; the warming capacity is medium, and rooting is made difficult.

Wine character and origin of the name

With this soil type, full-bodied, dense wines are associated, with moderate acidity and a creamy texture. As ripe fruit characteristics, mango, apricot, honeydew melon and mirabelle are named. The name Altdörr refers to the presence of thorn hedges in the local fields.
