Location and classification
The formally registered single vineyard Adler is located in the cadastral district of Merl in Zell (Mosel) in the winegrowing region Mosel. It belongs to the Großlage Schwarze Katz and is recorded under wine-vineyard number 440411 with 10.0 hectares of planted vineyard area.
Soil and cultivation
Merler Adler is documented as a steep hillside site with a south-westerly aspect and cooler nights. The soils consist of sandy, loose slate as well as stony slate weathering material and have a medium water retention capacity. Wire and stake training are recorded for vine training.
Grape varieties and wine style
Riesling is grown in Merler Adler; in addition, Grauburgunder, Kerner and Spätburgunder are documented. Merler-Adler Rieslings are associated with fruity and floral aromas, fine structure, freshness and comparatively low alcohol content. Dry, delicately off-dry, sweet and ice-wine-like maturation styles are recorded. For a documented Riesling, six hours of mash contact time, cold clarification and a roughly ten-week cool fermentation were used.
Historical significance
Merler Adler is one of the historic wine-growing sites in the area around Zell-Merl and appears in depictions of the local Merl winegrowing tradition.
