Location and Climate
Zwingenberg lies on the west-facing slope of the Odenwald, where the Hessische Bergstraße extends as a narrow landscape area between the Rhine plain and the Odenwald. The vineyards are located on the western slope of the 517-metre-high Melibokus massif. The Odenwald provides protection from cold easterly and north-easterly winds, while precipitation from the south-west reaches the region. The climate is mild and sunny.
Soils and Vineyard Sites
The upper vineyard sites have weathered granodiorite or granite soils. They are coarse-grained, low in nutrients, warm up quickly and only store limited amounts of water. As the land slopes downwards, the loess layer increases and can be several metres thick. In particular, the sites Alte Burg and Steingeröll are steep. Terraces, natural rock areas and dry stone walls divide the plots; vegetation between the rows of vines reduces soil erosion.
Viticulture in Zwingenberg
Zwingenberg belongs to the Hessische Bergstraße and includes the single sites Zwingenberger Alte Burg and Zwingenberger Steingeröll, which are assigned to the Auerbach Rott region. The steep sites are managed conventionally, integrated or ecologically by commercial viticulture businesses as well as private growers. In the demonstration vineyard Serpentino, since 2019, among other varieties, Riesling, Spätburgunder, Scheurebe, Elbling, Schwarzer Urban, Regent and Johanniter have been cultivated. Viticulture on the Bergstraße has been documented since Roman times; since 1971, the Hessische Bergstraße has been a separate German wine-growing region.
