Location and landscape
The municipality is officially called Wasserliesch; “Waßerliesch” is a variant spelling. It lies on the right bank of the Mosel and comprises the historic village centres of Liesch and Reinig. The municipal area lies at about 135 metres above sea level and covers 7.58 square kilometres.
Vine growing
Wasserliesch is located between the Mosel, the Albach and the Löschemer Berg, about 350 metres high, also known as the Liescher Berg. Vine-growing areas are found on the south-eastern slope of the Albachtal and on the terrace slopes of the Liescher Berg. Vine growing here has a long tradition and is already documented for the Roman period in the Mosel valley.
Vineyard sites and grape varieties
In the official vineyard sites directory for 2024, the single sites Albachtaler, with 6.7 hectares of planted vineyard area, and Reinig auf der Burg, with 5.2 hectares, are listed. Wasserliesch belongs to the wine-growing region Mosel, to the area of Upper Mosel, and to the large site Gipfel. Elbling is the most important traditional grape variety; in addition, Burgunder varieties and red grape varieties are grown.
Historical reference
Historically, the Reinig area was the site of a castle near the Mosel. Even today, the field and road name “Auf der Burg” bears witness to this.
