Location and landscape
Walporzheim lies on the left bank of the Ahr at the transition between the lower and middle Ahr valley. The landscape is shaped by steep rock formations; at the same time, the Ahr valley widens here to about one kilometre. Geological fault lines and more recent sediments in the surrounding subsidence areas are connected with this widening of the valley.
Viticulture
Walporzheim belongs to the Ahr and has preserved vineyard terraces dating back to the twelfth century. The steep slopes and small terraces make the comprehensive use of machinery in viticulture difficult. Among other varieties, Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Portugieser, Frühburgunder, Dornfelder, Riesling and Müller-Thurgau are grown.
History
The area was first documented in 893 AD in the Prüm property register under the names Willolfesdal and as property of the Walpretdeshouen monastery. Since the thirteenth century, Walporzheim, together with Bachem, belonged to the medieval town of Ahrweiler. Viticulture is also connected with the St.-Peter-Hof, which around 1100 belonged to the property of the Counts of Are and was transferred in 1246 to the Cologne cathedral chapter.
