Location
Wachwitz is a district of Dresden in the area of the city borough of Loschwitz on the right bank of the River Elbe in Saxony. The settlement developed on an alluvial fan of the Wachwitzbach at its mouth into the Elbe.
History
Wachwitz was first mentioned in a document in 1350 and was incorporated into Dresden in 1930. Because of the limited arable land, the residents carried out historical wine and fruit growing on the slopes.
Vine cultivation on the Elbe hillside
The Royal Vineyard lies on the Elbe hillside between Schloss Wachwitz and the Dresden TV tower. The complex includes historical terraces and retaining walls, as well as a historical wine-press house, a winemaker’s house and further vineyard buildings. The complex was owned by the Wettins from 1824 to 1945.
Land area
The Royal Vineyard covers about 20,000 square metres, or two hectares. A documented portion of the property extends over 5,300 square metres with approximately 4,000 vines in four non-contiguous plots.
