Location and municipal area
Viereth-Trunstadt is a municipality in the district of Bamberg in Upper Franconia and lies in Bavaria in southern Germany. The municipality comprises Viereth, Weiher, Trunstadt and Stückbrunn. The municipal area covers about 1,578 hectares and lies at around 240 metres above sea level.
Main and Steigerwald
The municipality is situated on the Main. Its Main valley slopes are connected with the northern outliers of the Steigerwald. Here there are calcareous dry grasslands as well as former vineyard areas with sandstone dry-stone walls and hollow ways.
Viticulture and cultural landscape
For Viereth, viticulture is already evidenced in a document from the year 911. In the second half of the 20th century, through private initiatives, several vineyards were re-established in Oberhaid and Viereth-Trunstadt. The documented wine-growing landscapes include narrow plots running across the slope, with steps and retaining walls. Hedges, near-natural meadows and herbaceous border strips often border the vineyard areas. Former vineyards have been preserved as elements of the cultural landscape with dry-stone walls, terraces and hollow ways.
Franconian wine designation
For wines with the protected designation of origin Franken, the term fränkisch trocken is legally reserved. The associated must must have at least 10.3 per cent potential alcohol; the wine may contain at most 4 grams of fermentable sugar per litre.
