Location and History
Unterleinach is a former municipality and today a locality within the municipality of Leinach in the district of Würzburg in Bavaria. Together with Oberleinach, Unterleinach was merged into the newly founded municipality of Leinach on 1 May 1978.
The historical records note early medieval grants of plots of land in Leinach to the Fulda Abbey, including vineyards, fields, houses and orchard gardens. These records formed the basis for the 1,200-year celebration of Unterleinach in 1976.
Vineyard Site Himmelberg
The Himmelberg vineyard site is an officially registered Franconian vineyard site in the area of Leinach. The vineyard directory lists plots in the cadastral areas of Oberleinach and Unterleinach; the Himmelberg is also recorded in the slope and plateau landscapes of the Leinach area.
Himmelberg is entered in the Bavarian vineyard register as a protected designation of origin for vineyards. The name may, subject to the applicable wine-law requirements, be used as a geographical indication for quality wine and for Prädikatswein.
