Location between the Neckar valley and the Schurwald
Uhlbach is a district of Stuttgart and belongs to the Obertürkheim borough in Baden-Württemberg. The place is located in the eastern part of the city, between the Neckar valley and the foothills of the Schurwald. The landscape includes steep vineyard slopes along the Neckar valley.
Wine-growing in Uhlbach
For centuries, Uhlbach has been shaped by wine-growing. Agriculture, in particular wine-growing, was historically an important source of income. Among other things, Riesling, Trollinger, Heroldrebe and Chardonnay are grown.
The Götzenberg site
The Götzenberg is a vineyard site in Uhlbach classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® and assigned to the Württemberg wine-growing region. The slopes rise from around 300 to 360 metres above sea level and have an inclination of roughly 45 percent. The sheltered site, facing south-southeast, and warm air currents promote the ventilation of the vineyards. The subsoil is shaped by fossil-rich sandstone of the Stuttgart Formation. For this site, Riesling and Lemberger are documented as classified grape varieties.
History and wine-growing culture
Uhlbach was first mentioned in documents in 1247. In 1937, the place lost its independence as a wine-growing municipality and joined Obertürkheim. In the historic Alten Kelter, there is an exhibition on wine-growing culture dating back around 2,000 years.
