Location and Topography
Sölden is a municipality in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald in Baden-Württemberg and belongs to the region Baden. The municipality lies in the Hexental between the area of Schönberg-Hohfirst and the Black Forest.
The municipal area covers about 380 hectares. Elevations range from 318 metres at the Rain- and Heidenbächle to 732 metres at the Kohlerkopf. The village church is at about 400 metres, the Bürgle at 578 metres.
Geology and Soils
In the planning area of Blümlematten, Holocene colluvial deposits and loess-bearing slope deposits occur. The soils include loess-rich, clay-containing fluviatile soils as well as colluvial deposits formed from colluvial material.
The unsealed soils investigated there are described as deep-seated colluvial deposits and loess-rich slope deposits. Overall, they have high soil function ratings and a very high natural soil fertility.
History
Sölden is documented in the Lorscher Codex as “Selidon” in an entry from the year 867. The municipal chronicle describes this mention as a reliable first record of the place.
In 1115, a Cluniac nuns’ convent was founded in Sölden. The institution was later linked with the Benedictine abbey of St. Peter and was dissolved in 1807.
