Roßdorf Roßberg
In Roßdorf there is the 2.5-hectare single vineyard Roßdorfer Roßberg. The vineyard is located on the south-west slope of the Roßberg, a former volcanic formation. Its subsoil consists of basalt with a covering of loess clay and is considered particularly suitable for Pinot varieties.
Climate and wine style
The Hessische Bergstraße is a mild wine-growing region, protected by the Odenwald from harsh north and east winds. For the region, the annual average is given as around 12 °C, more than 1,700 hours of sunshine and 690 millimetres of precipitation. The wines are described as fresh and firm; white wines are increasingly produced in fine, fruity styles.
History of winegrowing
Winegrowing in Roßdorf existed from the Middle Ages until the early 17th century. After being abandoned around 1700 as a result of climatic deterioration, it was resumed on the Roßberg after the Second World War; the year 1947 is documented for the modern cultivation of the site.
