Location and landscape
Rechtenbach is a municipality in the Main-Spessart district in Lower Franconia, Bavaria, and belongs to the administrative community of Lohr am Main. The town is located in the Spessart about 7 kilometres west of Lohr am Main on the federal highway B 26 and thus in the region Franconia. The settlement is situated in a Spessart valley between the Hemmberg, which is around 440 metres high, and the Roten Berg, which is approximately 455 metres high.
Nature and geology
Rechtenbach is surrounded by oak and beech forests, to which forest clearings also contribute to the local landscape. Geologically, the municipality lies in the hydrogeological area of the Spessart, in which Buntsandstein units form the predominant exposed rock formations.
History of glassmaking
Rechtenbach was first mentioned on 18 August 1522 in a document issued by Philipp von Rieneck. The development of the village began with a glassworks founded in 1687 by Johann Wenzel from Ruppertshütten. After the arrival of French glassmakers from Lorraine and Picardy, the settlement was expanded in the late 17th century. The local glassworks produced flat glass using a new process that was also used in the Lohr mirror manufactory.
