Rastenberg

Location and landscape

Rastenberg lies on the south-western edge of the Finne, where the Lossa leaves the Finne. Later, the river flows into the Unstrut. The town is situated on the south-western slope of the Finne at about 200 to 300 metres above sea level; the nearby Millsberge to the north reach 311 metres.

The Finne forests protect Rastenberg from northerly and north-easterly winds. As a result, the town administration describes the climate as warm, with low rainfall, few days with precipitation, and low wind speeds.

Geology

The Kapellenberg is a gypsum-keuper hill covered by ice-age sands, gravels and loess. At the Fuchsturm, the Finne fault exposes Wellenkalk, Röt and Middle Bunter Sandstone over Muschelkalk and Keuper layers.

Wine-growing and history

Historical tax registers provide evidence of vineyards in the area of the Ratsweinberg. After the Thirty Years’ War, they were not replanted and subsequently developed into steppe heath.

Rastenberg is part of the protected designation of origin Saale-Unstrut. In the official directory of wine-growing sites as at 31 December 2024, the town is assigned to the Thuringia area without a separately named wine-growing site of its own. A locally documented red wine is the Regent wine “Raspegold”, produced directly in Rastenberg.
