Location and landscape
Pleidelsheim is a municipality in the Neckar valley in the Ludwigsburg district in Baden-Württemberg. The municipal area covers 1,018 hectares and lies between 182 and 243 metres above sea level. The low-lying Neckar valley landscape includes the old Neckar channel (Altneckar) and the Pleidelsheim meadows valley (Pleidelsheimer Wiesental).
Soils and climate
The area of the Pleidelsheim sands consists of terrace gravels, which are overlain by ice-age river sediments with Keuper sandstone material. In the Neckar valley, on the broad floodplain with brown floodplain soils, there are flat loess deposits with Parabraunerde soils. The Pleidelsheim sands also have loess-clayey top layers and Parabraunerde soils. The local history describes the climate as favourable and points to fertile soils as well as the proximity to the Neckar.
Historic wine-growing
Under Württemberg rule, the historic municipal wine-pressing facility (Kelter) was built in 1511. In earlier times, up to three large wooden wine presses stood there. In a storage room, tithe wine and other wine levies were kept in barrels and in lockable containers.
History
Pleidelsheim was first mentioned on 19 October 794 under the name “Blidolvesheim” in a catalogue of properties of the Lorsch monastery. A house dating from the 16th century has large cellars which are regarded in the historical survey of the village as evidence of local winegrowers (Wengerter) and wine-growing in the area.
