Ostritz

Location

Ostritz is a town in the district of Görlitz in Saxony. It lies directly on the Lusatian Neisse at the Polish border.

Klosterberg

The Klosterberg is located on the south slope next to Kloster St. Marienthal at about 230 metres above sea level. Cultivated terraces lie between the monastery wall, the monastery forest and the Calvary hill.

History of winegrowing

Winegrowing on the south slope of St. Marienthal is documented up to the middle of the 19th century. After an infestation of the vineyards with phylloxera in the region, the vineyard was abandoned and burned down between 1870 and 1890. From 1986, eight families restored the terraces and initially farmed about 2,000 square metres.

Cultivation and grape varieties

The vineyard covers around 3,788 square metres with about 1,000 vines and is maintained by an honorary community of hobby winegrowers from Ostritz and Görlitz. The original plantings consisted of Müller-Thurgau and Goldriesling; around 1998 and 1999 they were replaced by the fungus-resistant varieties Saphira and Sirius. Since 1990, the wine has been processed in Ostritz and matured in a cellar beneath the vineyard. Saxon wine law lists the Ostritz Klosterberg as the single vineyard Klosterberg Ostritz.
