Ötisheim

Location and landscape

Ötisheim lies at the foot of the Stromberg in the region Württemberg, near Mühlacker, Maulbronn and Pforzheim. The municipal area is divided up by the Erlenbachtal valley. Between the valley floor and the reed sandstone escarpment at the Sauberg there are around 80 metres of elevation.

Climate and geology

The municipality describes Ötisheim as being climatically well balanced. Damage from hail occurs relatively infrequently, while in dry summers, occasionally lower rainfall totals are recorded. In geological terms, Ötisheim belongs to the Keuper and not to the shell limestone formations that shape large parts of the Enz valley.

Viticulture on the Sauberg

The Sauberg lies on the south-facing slope above the Ötisheim district of Schönenberg; the slope rises towards the Stromberg escarpment. In the lower vineyard slope, gypsum Keuper can be found, while reed sandstone characterises the upper slope and the forested high plateau. Viticulture remains part of the local agriculture there. For Ötisheim, the 2024 statistics show six hectares of vineyard area planted with wine grapes, including three hectares of white and four hectares of red varieties.

Traditional cultivation

The Sauberg was described as the largest remaining vineyard in Ötisheim still farmed using traditional methods. Earth paths, numerous dry stone walls made of Keuper sandstone, as well as vineyards, meadows and extensively managed species-rich orchards, shape the inherited structure. Local vintners’ resistance to a planned land consolidation in the early 1970s was cited as the reason for its preservation. In connection with the local sand and marl soils, Lemberger, Trollinger and Riesling are named as classic Württemberg varieties; in addition, biological pest control, ground cover, compost-based soil care, regular soil testing and targeted yield regulation are used.
