Obernau

Location and Landscape

Obernau is a district of the independent city of Aschaffenburg in Franconia, Bavaria. The place lies on the River Main between the river and wooded areas. The landscape of Obernau–Bessenbach in the Vorderer Spessart is a rolling hilly landscape that falls by about 300 metres from the edge of the Hochspessart to the valleys of the Main and Aschaff. A distinctive layer of Buntsandstein separates it from the Hochspessart.

The Aschaffenburg terraced valley in the Rhine-Main lowlands has a mean annual temperature of about 9 °C and is classified as a very warm landscape unit.

History and Viticulture

Obernau was first mentioned in documents in 1191 under the name Oberenheim. Historically, the place was shaped by agriculture, livestock farming and viticulture, and was incorporated into the city of Aschaffenburg on 1 May 1978.

The vineyard site Sanderberg is assigned to Obernau. It belongs to the protected German winegrowing region of Franconia, the Alzenau wine-growing region, and has no Großlage. For the use of a registered vineyard name as a geographical designation, at least 85 per cent of the grapes must come from the specified area; in addition, an official quality assessment number is required.
