Location and History
Oberleinach is a former municipality and today a settlement within the municipality of Leinach in Franconia. The municipality of Oberleinach was dissolved on 1 May 1978. Leinach lies in the Leinach valley, around 16 road kilometres north-west of Würzburg, in the natural region of Marktheidenfelder Platte.
Vineyard Location: Himmelberg
The Himmelberg is a parceled vineyard area around the southern part of Leinach, with a focus on the south-east-facing slope of the Volkenberg. The landscape has developed on Muschelkalk in the Leinach area; the prevailing rock is described as Lower Muschelkalk.
Viticulture
The Himmelberg is documented as a historic viticulture area in Leinach, where vineyards are already documented for the eighth century. In the winegrowing register of the Free State of Bavaria, the site for Leinach, Oberleinach is listed in the Mittelmain winegrowing region and also includes Leinach, Unterleinach. As the prevailing grape variety of the Leinach Himmelberg, Spätburgunder is documented.
