Niederburg

Niederburg is a local municipality in the Rhein-Hunsrück district in Rhineland-Palatinate and belongs to the wine-growing region Mittelrhein. The municipality is situated on the eastern edge of the Hunsrück on the last terrace sloping down towards the Rhine. From the elevated areas, views extend to Oberwesel and to other landscape features of the Upper Middle Rhine. A prominent local elevation is the 412-metre-high Spitzestein.

In comparison with the surrounding higher areas, the Middle Rhine Valley counts among the thermally favoured regions. The vineyards benefit from the warm, relatively dry microclimate of the Rhine Valley. Geologically, Devonian slate formations, weathered slate and slate rubble, as well as locally associated layers of sandstone shape the region.

For Niederburg, the single vineyard sites Bienenberg and St. Martinsberg are documented. The Bienenberg extends in the wine-growing geodata system across the cadastral areas of Niederburg and Oberwesel. In the 2024 directory of wine sites, 5.0 hectares of planted vineyard area are recorded for St. Martinsberg in the cadastral area of Niederburg.

Niederburg was mentioned in 1286 as Nyderinberc. According to the transmitted local history, the settlement was probably founded between 900 and 1000 as the foundation of Oberwesel. After the conflict between Oberwesel and the Archbishop of Trier in the years 1390 and 1391, Niederburg received its own rights, was referred to as a town around 1414, and came again under the rule of Oberwesel in 1434.
