Relief and soils

The area of Nieder-Olm includes the warmer Selz valley and the cooler higher elevations. The plateau areas are more exposed to the prevailing westerly winds than the valley. The Klosterberg is situated on a slope facing towards the Zornheim Berg and looks over the Selz valley. The vineyard site is characterised by limestone and Rendzina, which formed from tertiary marine deposits in connection with a limestone reef. The soil is shallow to medium-depth, very calcareous and stony-sandy-loamy. It has low water storage capacity that is available to plants, good aeration and heat retention, as well as limited rooting depth.

Viticulture on the Klosterberg

The 2024 vineyard register assigns the Nieder-Olm Klosterberg to the Rheinhessen wine-growing region, the Nierstein area and the Großlage Gutes Domtal. For this site, 134.4 hectares of planted vineyard area are listed. Riesling is documented there. The vintages 2023 that are covered were bottled as German quality wines in the styles dry and fine off-dry; they had 3.1 and 13.8 grams of residual sugar per litre respectively. For a Riesling, an harvest at the end of September is given after the grapes have reached full ripeness, which is associated with sunny days and cool nights during ripening.

History

The name Klosterberg is traced back to the settlement of a monastery in Mainz. Nieder-Olm belonged to the Prince-Archbishopric of Mainz from the early Middle Ages. In the north-eastern part of the town, archaeological remains of a Roman villa rustica were found at the Wingertsmühle. In 2006, Nieder-Olm was granted town rights.
