Location in the Unstrut Valley
Nebra is located in Saxony-Anhalt on the Unstrut. The historic settlement lies in and above the Unstrut valley; the Altenburg and the castle ruin are situated higher above the valley and the meadow land. The municipal area lies at about 161.9 metres above sea level.
Landscape and Winegrowing
Nebra belongs to the Saale-Unstrut winegrowing region and is located in the Geo-Nature Park Saale-Unstrut-Triasland. The landscape includes river floodplains, dry grasslands, historic vineyards and geological features of interest. In the official directory of vineyard sites, the vineyard site Hahnenberge is listed with Nebra as one of its cadastral units.
Vineyard Sites and Grape Varieties
Below the Nebra castle ruin, a communal vineyard is located on the south side of the site. Souvignier Gris, Regent and Cabernet Cortis are grown there. Historic wine cellars from the former castle or fortress complex have been preserved at the castle ruin.
Historic Winegrowing
For the region, a record of a hereditary lease of a vineyard from the year 1555 and a wine ordinance from 1588 have been handed down. Winegrowing in the Saale-Unstrut area focuses on the narrow valleys of the Saale and Unstrut as well as on terraces and protected slopes, preferably oriented to the south.
