Mücheln

Location and urban area

Mücheln (Geiseltal) is a town in the Saalekreis district in Saxony-Anhalt. It lies in the Geiseltal between the Harz foreland and the Leipzig lowlands. The town’s urban area includes, among other things, the local districts of Gröst, Langeneichstädt, Wünsch, Oechlitz, Schmirma and Branderoda.

Geiseltalsee and landscape

A part of the Geiseltalsee lies within Müchelner’s town area. The lake, which was created from a former open-cast lignite mine, has a water surface area of about 18.4 square kilometres. Lignite mining ended in 1993; afterwards, the former mining landscape was converted into a lake and tourism region.

In the Geiseltal, Muschelkalk crops up in the basin interior, and Buntsandstein further out. Beneath that lie Zechstein gypsum and -salts. The Müchelner limestone valleys are shaped by incised valleys, with sometimes thin layers of soil cover.

Viticulture

In Gröst, agriculture including viticulture has traditionally shaped the surrounding area. A modern viticulture project was started in 1997 on the reclaimed opencast mining site between Mücheln and Braunsbedra. The vineyard by the Geiseltalsee lies on a south-facing slope inclined at about 30 per cent. The lake surface influences site conditions, while a forest on the north side protects against cold air.

The vineyard directory of the Saale-Unstrut region lists, up to and including 31 December 2024, the single vineyard Gröster Steinberg with 19.5283 hectares of planted vineyard area in the cadastral area of Gröst. For the care of the vineyard, since 2008 Red Harzer mountain cattle have been used; in addition, winter pruning is documented as a recurring task.

History

Mücheln was first mentioned around 890 in the Hersfeld tithe register and was granted town rights in 1350 by Friedrich the Strict.
