Location and landscape
Martinstein is a municipality in the Bad Kreuznach district in Rhineland-Palatinate. The municipal area covers about 0.39 km², or 41 hectares. The landscape above the town looks out from rocky terrain over the Nahe valley.
Starting point on the Nahe
Martinstein is regarded as the starting point of the Nahe Wine Route and the Mittelnahe wine hiking trail, which leads through the vineyards as far as in the direction of Bad Sobernheim. The Nahe wine-growing region is generally characterised by a mild climate with little rainfall. In the upper Nahe and its side valleys, cooler air currents from the Soonwald, the Hunsrück and the North Palatinate Uplands ensure later grape ripening.
Schloßberg vineyard
The single-vineyard Schloßberg is located in the municipality and cadastral district of Martinstein and bears the wine-growing classification 511308. A vineyard cottage named Weinbergshaus Schlossberg is listed in the monument register of the Bad Kreuznach district. The Nahe wine-growing region is designated under German wine law as a specific growing area for quality wine, predicate wine and quality sparkling wine.
Historic town centre
Below Martinstein Castle, a settlement developed from 1342, which was enclosed by a wall in 1359. In later historical documents, the settlement was referred to as Martinstein.
