Location and local districts
March is a municipality in the Freiburg Bight in Baden-Württemberg and belongs to the region Baden. It comprises Buchheim, Holzhausen, Hugstetten and Neuershausen. The four local districts came together to form the municipality of March on 1 December 1973.
Nimberg and geology
The municipal area includes the southern part of the Nimberg, also known as the Marchhügel. The geologically and tectonically isolated foreland block consists of Mesozoic and Tertiary rocks and is covered at the surface by loess. In the west there are gravel-filled diluvial and alluvial deposits of the Dreisam alluvial fan; in the eastern lowlands near Holzhausen, deposits of the Glotter alluvial fan are added.
Vineyard sites on the Marchhügel
On the Marchhügel, which is also called the Nimberg, the vineyard sites Rebstuhl are located near Buchheim and Steingrube near Neuershausen. Local descriptions associate these sites with wines from March as well as with Müller-Thurgau, Weissburgunder and Spätburgunder. The field name Rebstuhl is attested for 1344 in the historical form “raebstal” and is interpreted as the place where vines grow. For 1880, around five hectares of vineyard area are documented in Buchheim for Rebstuhl and around 14 hectares in Neuershausen.
