Location on the Moselle
Lösnich is a wine village on the Middle Moselle between Bernkastel-Kues and Traben-Trarbach. The village lies in the bends of the Moselle, is surrounded by vineyards and is located on the so-called pointing finger of the Moselle glove. The protected Middle Moselle valley (Tallima) is shaped by steep slate slopes that store warmth during the day and release it again at night.
Vineyard sites and soils
The Lösnicher Försterlay lies at an altitude of 110 to 260 metres with hillside inclines of 10 to 60 percent. The vineyard site features stony, weathered clay slate and is also described as blue slate. The Lösnicher Burgberg is situated on a steep bank behind the village and is characterised by deep alluvial soils.
Winegrowing in Lösnich
Winegrowing has shaped Lösnich for centuries. The Lösnicher Försterlay is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE; the classified grape variety is Riesling, and the classified area covers 10.34 hectares. Around the Lösnicher Burgberg, Müller-Thurgau is named as the preferred grape variety; in addition, Riesling and red grape varieties are grown.
History and wine law
Lösnich is first mentioned in documents in 1066. In the Middle Ages, the village had a castle and its own jurisdiction; the castle was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. Lösnich is one of the municipalities for which the protected geographical indication “Landwein der Mosel” applies.
