Location and Landscape
Lieser is a municipality in the middle Moselle Valley between Koblenz and Trier on the Moselle. The village is situated in the protected landscape of the Mosel valley and is surrounded by the Moselle as well as steep vineyard slopes.
Vineyard Sites and Terroir
Among the three well-known vineyard sites of Lieser are Schloßberg, Niederberg-Helden and Rosenlay. Niederberg-Helden is associated as a VDP.GROSSE LAGE® with the estate Schloss Lieser.
The vineyards of Schloss Lieser lie on south and south-west facing slopes with loosely weathered slate soils, as well as stony, soft Devonian slate soils. Some slopes reach an incline of up to 80 percent. The steep slate layers store warmth during the day and release it again at night.
Winegrowing in Lieser
Schloss Lieser cultivates 29 hectares of vineyard area exclusively with Riesling. The range of wines extends from dry wines to wines with residual sweetness and includes various German Prädikat categories. The vineyards are farmed in a nature-oriented way, with the grapes being selected by hand in several passes. Wines from major sites such as Niederberg-Helden are bottled as site wines.
Lieser belongs to the designated area of the protected designation of origin Mosel. The middle Moselle Valley is among the warmest winegrowing climates in Germany.
History
Archaeological finds provide evidence of Roman water pipes, tiles and a Roman press. The first documented place name, Lisura, dates from the year 817. The building of Schloss Lieser was created around 1884; after moving in, Eduard Puricelli soon began cultivating vineyards on the surrounding slopes.
